The American Academy of Pediatrics released a clinical report with guidelines for identification of children with autism spectrum disorders (Johnson, Myers, & Council on Children with Disabilities, 2007). The article stresses the importance of early intervention and contains recommendations to conduct surveillance for ASDs at every well-child visit and to formally screen at 18 and 24 months or at any point a parent raises concern. When multiple risk factors are present, it is recommended that the physician avoid adopting a "wait-and-see" approach (p. 1206). The report discusses the importance of a team evaluation conducted by specialists in ASDs.
